Synopsis

Two boys, Ted, 9, and Jackie, 12, plan to run away from their homes in a London slum by stowing away on a ship bound for Jamaica. Ted is leaving home to escape his scolding parents, who forbid his friendship with the halfcaste Jackie. Jackie intends to join his Jamaican father because his mother, a white prostitute, causes him to feel that he is in the way. The boys reach Liverpool by stowing away on a furniture van traveling north. They steal a suitcase from an unlocked Rolls-Royce and sell it to a junk dealer for money to purchase food. The car's owner, shipping magnate Lord Brantley, reports the theft to police, who soon apprehend the boys. Police Inspector Carter learns of the boys' unpleasant home life, gives them a mild reprimand, and sends them home. En route they are saddened to see their ship leaving; but the welfare worker accompanying them inadvertently tells them there are plenty of ships leaving for Jamaica from their home city of London.
