Synopsis

A wealthy, middle-aged Greek farmer, Dimitri Kanalis, ignores his second wife and spends his time in the town gambling and chasing other women, while Anestis, the emotionally disturbed and sexually frustrated son of his first marriage, becomes interested in the family's deafmute maid, Chryssa. Anestis' stepsister, Anna, a student at the University of Athens, returns home, hoping to marry a young engineer, Nikos, whose family is hated by her father. After seeing Anna and Nikos making love, Anestis is driven to sexually assaulting and eventually killing Chryssa when she seeks to avoid him. He tries to hide Chryssa's body in the hayloft but is discovered by his stepmother, who informs the boy's father. Dimitri beats his son but decides to bury Chryssa's body in the lake and inform the police that the maid has disappeared. Because of Anna's suspicion of what must have happened, the family agree to her marriage to Nikos, but as the entire village is celebrating the wedding the body of the maid is discovered by a fisherman.
