Synopsis

Maeva, a beautiful Tahitian, grows up in a small fishing village where she tends the boats and nets with Kiro, a native boy. Maeva dreams of becoming his woman, but he goes away, leaving her lonely and unfulfilled. One day she is raped by a sailor, and soon after, she leaves the village to become a European painter's model. At the studio, Maeva meets Pierre, who sees her posing. Maeva seduces him, and they have a brief love affair, but he leaves her for another woman. She then begins frequenting the bars on the waterfront and having a series of reckless affairs. She meets Guido, who is kind to her at first, but like the other Europeans he soon leaves her. Realizing that she must go home, Maeva returns to her village and resumes her work with the fishing boats. At a native dance she meets Uira, who falls in love with her and asks her to be his woman.
