Synopsis
Steven Duval, a prominent French artist and the writer of a controversial publication, is sent on false charges to the French penal colony of Devil's Island. There the commandant insists that Duval paint a portrait of his daughter Marlene. Realizing that Duval and his friend Dione were unjustly brought to the island, Marlene helps plan an escape to Brazil. Duval impersonates Captain Whorf, the prison guard engaged to be married to Marlene, and the three flee into the Amazon jungle where Dione is attacked and killed by a jaguar. In pursuit of Duval and Marlene, Captain Whorf and his men are captured by the Jivaro Indians; but Duval returns, sets fire to the Indian village, and saves Whorf. In return, Captain Whorf allows Marlene and Duval to leave safely for Brazil.
