Synopsis

Marc Daumel, a French artist, leaves behind his divorced wife and 6-year-old daughter in Paris and comes to New York City in the hope of finding a new approach to life. Following an art gallery showing of his work, he attends a pop art party on a boat off Manhattan and meets Ellen Tracy, a beautiful black model. After several dates, they fall in love and move into a loft rented by Marc. However, their different attitudes toward life result in a conflict: Marc is interested in absorbing black culture via firsthand trips to Harlem, while Ellen prefers the things from which Marc is trying to escape--cocktail parties attended by wealthy, jaded bohemians, and the status symbols that go with gracious living. Before they can resolve their dilemma, Marc receives a message that his daughter has been injured in an accident. Forced to return to Paris, he says goodby to Ellen. Although he leaves their future in doubt, Ellen feels certain that she will never see him again.
