Synopsis

American corset salesman Cicero Hannibal Butts goes to London on his honeymoon, and then decides to take his new wife to Russia. Meanwhile, Anna Varvara, a Russian dancer on tour in England and suspected of nihilist tendencies, hears of Cicero's trip and determines that the best way to sneak past the authorities and return to Russia is to accompany the couple. Then, Mrs. Butts is called back to America, and Cicero agrees to take Anna with him and let her pose as his wife. En route, Anna introduces Cicero to her fellow nihilists, who entrust the corset expert with the task of killing the czar. Mrs. Butts, meanwhile, has decided not to return to America after all, and follows Cicero instead, growing more and more suspicious of him along the way. When she finally catches up with him, however, she discovers that, rather than being an adulterer, he is a Russian national hero for having turned Anna over to the authorities.

George E. Mack appeared in the New York stage production of the play as well as in the film. 1916 sources credit Flora Zabelle with recreating her stage role, but modern sources do not list her in the play's original cast.
