Synopsis

Although he has been preaching the Christian doctrine, Philip Strong, an ambitious pastor, realizes that he has not been practicing it. As a result, he gives up all of his material belongings and dedicates himself to helping the downtrodden. When he asks his wife Sarah to help him, she turns him down, and further refuses to let him raise their daughter Irma in the squalor of the slums. Then, living alone in a tenement, Philip does so much to improve the quality of life of the impoverished that some concerned millionaires decide to discredit him by letting it be known that Philip is having an affair with Loreen, a former prostitute. Finally, the rumor is shown to be false and Sarah decides to return to Philip. Before they can be reconciled, however, Philip dies from worry and overwork.
