Synopsis

When a rich vein of ore is found on the Rogers' property, the overly ambitious mother sees her chance to enter high society, while her husband and their daughter Esmeralda want their lives to continue in their formerly pleasant manner. After Esmeralda's sweetheart, David Hardy, convinces her mother not to sell the land but to lease it, their profits multiply, and they move to the city. David, realizing that he must make something of himself to satisfy Esmeralda's mother, also goes there. After Esmeralda refuses the many fortune-seekers whom her mother wants her to marry, her mother tells her that David has died. Numb with grief, Esmeralda agrees to marry Count de Montessin to gratify her mother's wishes. When David reads the wedding announcement, he rushes to Esmeralda, who swoons upon seeing him outside the church. News arrives that the Rogers' ore has run out, and a rich vein has been found on David's property. When he offers to care for Esmeralda's parents, her mother consents to their marriage.
