Synopsis

Helena Nichols goes to Boston where she meets Harry Rivers Graham, a Southern aristocrat who calls himself Harry Rivers. The two marry and have a daughter named Lena, but Harry keeps the marriage secret from his family. When he is found standing over a body after a barroom brawl, he is arrested for murder. Helena, believing that she has been abandoned, returns with Lena to her hometown, where she dies of a broken heart. Meanwhile, Harry is released and returns home to hear that his wife and daughter have died. He goes back to Kentucky, and without revealing his first marriage, weds Lucy Belmont, a wealthy widow and the mother of a young son named Durward. Years later, Lena and Grandma Nichols go to Kentucky to live with Lena's uncle John. Durward, now grown, falls in love with Lena and when he introduces her to his stepfather, Harry realizes that she is his own daughter. Harry's interest in Lena inspires jealousy on the parts of Durward and Lucy, who misinterpret their affection. Although Harry has sworn Lena to secrecy about their true relationship, he eventually confesses to save her reputation. His revelation leads to his reconciliation with Lucy and Lena's renewed romance with Durward.
