Synopsis

Mathias, an Alsatian innkeeper who is being pressed for money, robs and murders one of his guests, a wealthy Polish Jew named Koveski. As the years go by, Mathias attains success but is secretly tormented by the sound of the sleigh bells that accompanied Koveski's approach to the inn. When his daughter Annette marries Christian, captain of the guard, there is a celebration at the inn. On the eve of Annette's marriage, hoping to avoid being entranced by a mesmerist hired to entertain the wedding guests, Mathias sneaks up to his room and dreams that the mesmerist extracts a confession from him. When he wakes up, he rushes downstairs crying "The bells, the bells!" and then falls dead.
