Synopsis

Albert Capellani, the film director, approaches actor Robert Warwick to play the lead role in his new melodrama, The Flash of an Emerald . As a skeptical Warwick studies the script, its plot unfolds. In the film-within-the-film, Waldeck, a social vulture and thief played by Warwick, plans the robbery of an emerald belonging to Mrs. Watson, who has traveled to Quebec with her invalid granddaughter. After breaking into their hotel room, Waldeck chloroforms the women and steals all of Mrs. Watson's jewels. While escaping, he is spotted by two hotel guests, Victoria and Sonia, but finds his way to New York a free man. Posing now as a noble Russian emigre, Waldeck garners the romantic attention of the rich Phillipa Ford, but Victoria, her friend, has a fearful if fuzzy feeling about the man. When Waldeck gives Phillipa the Watson emerald, Victoria makes the connection to Quebec and notifies the police. Caught while fleeing with the jewels, Waldeck chooses suicide over jail.
