Synopsis
Sebastien, a landowner, shelters the orphan Marta in exchange for sexual favors. When, years later, Sebastien's fortunes ebb, he marries Muri, the daughter of a rich man, and arranges for Marta to marry the shepherd Manelich. Sebastien assures Marta that Manelich knows of their relationship and will not interfere, but she discovers that her husband is ignorant of the affair and, in fact, loves her. Because she comes to return her husband's love, she confesses her past, after which Manelich kills Sebastien. With Marta at his side, the shepherd then returns to the hills.

Notes
This was Bertha Kalich's film debut. Some exteriors were shot on location in Cuba. An opera entitled Tiefland ("The Lowland"), based on the same source, with music by Eugene D'Albert and libretto by Rudolph Lothar, had its premiere in Prague November 15, 1903. An English version translated by R. H. Elkin and copyrighted 1908 was included in the Paramount studio files for this film. On March 24, 1908, the play opened in New York in a version translated by Wallace Gilpatrick and Guido Marburg. Leni Riefenstahl directed and starred in a film version entitled Tiefland which she started in 1934, continued intermittently, and released in 1954.
