Synopsis

Itinerant revivalist Judson Davids persuades Daire Vincent to elope with him from her small town. Within a year, he deserts her without having married her and goes to New York, where opportunities for graft are plentiful. As Davids makes a fortune collecting money for various charities and becomes the leader of a great crusade movement, Daire gives birth to a boy and is forced to become a dance hall girl to support him. After Daire gains a position in the famous Mozart dance hall in New York, Davids, who has fallen in love with and married a sickly woman who is childless, plans to raid the Mozart for publicity. When Daire recognizes Davids' cohort, she takes the child to Davids' home. The sight of his son moves Davids deeply, but it also brings on his wife's death. During the raid, Davids is wounded. He wishes to marry Daire, but she refuses until Father White, a slum worker, convinces her that the ceremony will legitimize the child. After taking the marriage vows, Davids dies.
