Synopsis

British officers Lord Desborough and Captain Mostyn court the same woman, Muriel. After she marries Desborough, the regiment goes to India, where Desborough has an affair with adventuress Vivian Darville. Back in England, Mostyn, along with Darville's rejected suitor, officer Rupert Lee, report the dalliance to Muriel. After Mostyn impregnates Mary Aylmer, the nurse of Desborough's son Harold, Mostyn convinces Muriel that Mary is carrying Desborough's child. Muriel leaves with Mostyn as her escort to London, but he instead takes her to a disreputable inn. Desborough arrives to interrupt their struggle and, after thrashing Mostyn, instigates an action for separation and gets possession of Harold. When Desborough is nearly ruined financially, a countess, known as "The Sporting Duchess" because of her fondness for horseracing, outbids Mostyn for Desborough's favorite horse "Clipstone," scheduled to enter the Derby against Mostyn's horse. After Clipstone wins, Mostyn leaves with Vivian, but Rupert, now thoroughly incensed, relates Mostyn's scheme. The Desboroughs are reunited and Mary's lover forgives her.

This film was selected to be shown at the opening of Madison Square Garden as the world's largest motion picture theatre, seating 12,000, but at the last minute, Silver Threads Among the Gold replaced it, which disappointed some of the audience.
