Synopsis

Martinez, the commander of a Mexican garrison, joins forces with a plantation owner, Flores, to enslave the Yaqui Indians, thus guaranteeing an ample supply of workers. To provide an excuse for the action, Martinez insults Modesta, the wife of Tambor, the Yaqui leader, and treats Tambor's response as a military provocation. Tambor is shot and buried, but it transpires that the executioner had removed powder from the bullet so that it would only stun Tambor, who is later exhumed and revived. The subjugated Yaquis are taken to Flores' plantation, with Tambor accompanying them in disguise. When Flores attempts to rape Modesta, she stabs herself, and Tambor arrives in time to kill Flores with the same dagger. Enlisting the help of Hernandez, an officer in Martinez's command, Tambor leads the Yaquis in a revolt against their captors, killing Martinez with his own hands and winning freedom for his people.
