Synopsis

During Louis XVIII's reign, the aristocrat Ambrose loves the peasant Jeanne Mailloche but marries his cousin, Alice de Fontelles. Twenty years later, Ambrose tells his son Victor, a captain in the army, about his illegitimate child Rabat, who was kidnapped by gypsies after Jeanne died. Ambrose's secretary, Munier, whose niece Lucille is Victor's fiancée, plans with Rabat, now a wanted criminal, to rob conspirators with whom Munier is associated, who are plotting to put the exiled Napoleon on the throne. Lucille witnesses the murder of the conspirator's courier and, seeing Rabat's face in the moonlight, thinks he is Victor. Before Victor's execution, Lucille learns the truth and forces Munier to testify. Although Rabat is arrested and Victor is reprieved, because Napoleon has since come to power, Victor faces execution as a political prisoner until Lucille, threatening to disclose Munier's scheme, has him intercede. Munier escapes France, Victor and Lucille marry, and Rabat, after Victor inspires him, faces death with resignation.
