Synopsis

Because he disagrees with his son's career decision to become a writer instead of joining the family business, Mr. Sheridan mistreats Bibbs, his youngest son, and drives him to a sanitarium. Upon his release from the hospital, Bibbs meets Mary Vertrees, a poor but "aristocratic" young woman, who takes pity on the hapless heir, but becomes engaged to Jim Sheridan, Bibbs's older brother. When Sybil Sheridan, Bibbs's sister-in-law, seeks an affair with the fortune-hunting Robert Lamhorn, who is engaged secretly to Edith Sheridan, Mary rethinks her decision to marry into the rich family. After she refuses Jim's proposal, he is killed in a warehouse accident. Bibbs then proposes to Mary, but is rejected by her because she fears she would be marrying not for love, but only for the money. Alone and brokenhearted after the death of Jim and the elopement of Edith and Lamhorn, Mr. Sheridan gently encourages Bibbs to become involved in his business and manipulates money matters so that Mary can marry Bibbs without worry.
