Synopsis

Nine-year-old Carol Bird, born on Christmas morning, grows to be the sweetest child of all, although she is doomed to a life of pain and inactivity because she is crippled. From her bedroom window, Carol can see the impoverished Ruggles family playing in the street below, and as time goes on, all her interests begin to center on the poor Ruggles children. Carol sends them an invitation to attend Christmas dinner at the Bird mansion on her ninth birthday. The invitation causes quite an upheaval in the Ruggles household as Mrs. Ruggles tries to coach her brood on proper manners. On the appointed night, Carol's Uncle Jack officiates at the head of the table while Carol's bed is moved to the dining room. All goes well and after the contented Ruggles leave weighted down with presents, Carol confides to her mother that they have captured the true spirit of Christmas.
