Synopsis

When George Rand, Sr. becomes president of his father's bank, he marries for social position and rejects Mary Hale, his hometown sweetheart. In a fury, Mary weds Jim Hannock, a drunk who later deserts her and their baby boy. Destitute, Mary writes to Rand, now married and prosperous, for assistance, and Rand, believing the boy to be his son, begins to send Mary monthly checks. Years later, the decrepit, drug-addicted Hannock, Jr. visits Rand and threatens him with blackmail. Stunned, Rand tells his real son about Hannock and then succumbs to a fatal stroke. George, Jr. moves his sisters, Cicely and Teresa, to the city and makes Hannock, his apparent half brother, his secretary. During George's campaign for governor, Hannock threatens to expose some of George's correspondence in which questionable business practices are discussed unless George pays him off with graft money. At the same time, Cicely tells George she is married to Hannock. Still convinced that Hannock is his brother, George informs Cicely that the union is incestuous. Horrified, Hannock shoots and kills Cicely, then turns the gun on himself. Finally free from his family's past, George swears off his illegal practices, runs for governor and marries his devoted sweetheart.
