Synopsis

Although Englishman Peter Waverton loves Beatrice Dainton, his fiancée, he cannot help thinking about Margaret Summers, with whom he had an affair eight years before. Lady Hurley, Peter's status-conscious sister, had managed to break up that relationship by convincing Margaret, who was her maid, that Peter had deserted her when, really, he went to Europe on business. Then, before the wedding, but long after having been dismissed from Lady Hurley's service, Margaret, who has lost her way in the London fog, appears on Peter's doorstep. The two ex-lovers are shocked to see each other, but then they have a long conversation during which all of the misconceptions of the past are explained. Margaret introduces Peter to his eight-year-old son, about whom he had no knowledge, and then Beatrice, realizing that her fiancé's place is with his son and the boy's mother, breaks the engagement so that Peter can marry Margaret.
