Synopsis

Except for Ariel Tabor, everyone in the small town of Canaan makes fun of Joe Louden. Having taken enough abuse, Joe finally leaves Canaan and goes to law school. He returns a few years later and opens a practice, but Canaan's attitude towards him has not changed, and so his only clients are the town drunks. Joe himself drifts into alcoholism, until Ariel, who has been living in Paris after inheriting a small fortune, returns to Canaan and convinces Joe to reform. Then Joe gets his first big case, and in winning it he exposes all of the corrupt officials in Canaan. After his triumph, he and Ariel plan their marriage, and the town hails Joe as a hero.
