Synopsis

Peter Donaldson, a bankrupt lawyer, decides to commit suicide by swallowing an experimental drug that promises to kill its taker in exactly seven days. To make the most of his remaining days, he books a suite in an expensive hotel where he witnesses a man's violent actions toward his sister. Concerned, Peter tails the couple and learns that the man, Ben Arsdale, is an opium addict. Ellen, Ben's sister, begs Peter to follow her brother and bring him back from the Chinatown opium dens. With the help of Police Inspector Saule, Peter stumbles onto a jewelry theft to which Ben is circumstantially connected. Believing that Ben is guilty, Peter and Ellen search desperately for the addict and gradually fall in love with each other. Peter turns himself in to protect Ben, but the real thief is eventually found. After discovering that his suicide potion is a fake, Peter convinces Ben to quit his drug habit and proposes to Ellen.
