Synopsis

In 1775, Basil Jennico swears to his dying uncle that he will uphold the pride of the Jennico family and not marry a social inferior. Meanwhile, Princess Ottilie flees from her uncle, the Duke of Dornheim, who has arranged her marriage to Prince Eugen, a scoundrel whose mistress is the gypsy Michel. When Ottilie and her maid Marie take refuge in Basil's house during a storm, they reverse roles. Although Basil believes he has fallen in love with the maid, he agrees to marry the supposed princess. At the end of the ceremony, Ottilie raises her veil and Basil discovers that he has actually married the woman he assumes to be a commoner. Eugen then falsely summons Ottilie to the bedside of her dying guardian. She is imprisoned, but escapes after several weeks. Basil slays Eugen, and when he is reunited with Ottilie, he discovers he has married a princess.
