Synopsis

The famous detective Monsieur Lecoq hears several shots emanate from the infamous Pepperbox Inn and finds a man dressed as a laborer holding a revolver and standing over two dead men. After the man is arrested, Lecoq discovers clues to indicate that a woman and a lame man were also there. When Lecoq learns that the lame man had been arrested for drinking, placed in the same cell with the suspect and then released, Lecoq convinces a judge to release the suspect so that he can trail him. After Lecoq discovers that the suspect is the Duke of Sairmuse, Lecoq tricks him into confessing that he followed his wife to the inn after he learned that she was being blackmailed. When the blackmailers, who discovered unsavory information about the duchess' profligate brother, violently seized her earring, the duke entered and killed them. The lame man was his valet, who arranged to have himself arrested to help the duke plan a defense. To save the duke from disgrace, Lecoq destroys the incriminating evidence.
