Synopsis

College tennis champion Edward Worthington Swinger graduates and finds himself broke and in love with Caroline Pickering, the daughter of pickle king Septimus Pickering. Just when Ed arrives at Pickering's office to plead his suit, Mrs. Pickering brings another suitor, Professor Bliss, whose promotion of the Persian poet Mahala, known for his precepts of "Be Calm," and "All is Peace," leads Pickering to throw Bliss out and listen to Ed. After Pickering recovers from Ed's request for a $100,000 loan to start a business, Pickering offers $20,000 with the condition that only if Ed doubles this amount in three months, can he wed Caroline. After Ed secretly begins a successful rival pickle business with his college boardinghouse keeper, Mrs. Jones, Ed suggests to the nervous Pickering that he buy out the rival for $50,000. When Pickering refuses, Jonesey and Ed issue stock. After the sales mount, Pickering agrees to buy at the inflated price of $100,000. When he realizes that Ed was behind it all, Pickering, thinking it best to have him in the family, consents to the marriage.
