Synopsis

After stockbroker Malcolm Piers, the scion of an old aristocratic family, goes bankrupt, he leaves for the Canadian Northwest with only a banjo to remake his fortune. John Garrod, Piers's secretary, loses clients' securities gambling and blames the absent Piers. In Athabasca, Piers, now called "Jack Chanty" because of his songs, wit and fellowship, falls in love with Mary Cranston, a quarter-breed. When Lieutenant Governor Sir Bryson Trangmar arrives to search for gold, Mary jealously watches as Trangmar's daughter Luedd flirts with Jack. Garrod, now in Trangmar's service, refuses to recognize Jack. After Trangmar hires Jack and Ascota, a half-breed who loves Mary, Trangmar's claim is found to be worthless. Trangmar arrests Jack after Garrod tells of his supposed crime and appropriates Jack's rich claims, but with the aid of Mary and her brother, Jack exonerates himself. After Garrod escapes and dies from exhaustion, and Ascota jumps from a mountain to escape Jack's vengeance, Jack leaves for civilization with Luedd. Disgusted with the shallowness he finds, he returns to the waiting Mary.
