Synopsis

Jerrold D. Scott, a New York importer, has his stepson Jack, who has just returned from college, adopt his name and become his partner. On his first day of work, Jack has a friendly conversation with Gertie Meyers, a poor laundry woman's daughter who is one of many applicants for a stenographer's position. Scott hires her for her looks and pays her more than she asks. His fatherly comforting when she gets upset at her inability to take dictation, soon leads to unwanted advances, while Jack's interest develops into a proposal of marriage. That night, Scott keeps Gertie after hours and attacks her, but her screaming causes Jack to break through the glass door and stop the assault. Scott, not knowing of Jack's love, angrily orders him out of the office and the business, but after Scott learns that Jack and Gertie refrained from telling Scott's wife, Scott resolves to change, takes Jack back and consents to Jack and Gertie's marriage.
