Synopsis
In the early eighteenth century, flirtatious Dolly Erskine, the ward of an English estate owner, must marry someone titled to gain her inheritance, but seeing her sister's loveless marriage to Sir William Chetwynde, Dolly refuses to let her brother-in-law choose her husband. Dolly falls in love with her riding master, Richard Murray, really the Earl of Basset, who is trying to escape the designing matrons' scheming to have him marry their daughters. After hearing him wager he will win her, however, Dolly resolves to fool him. After her sister, to escape her husband's brutality, leaves with Captain Cardiff for Gretna Green, an idyllic haven in northern Scotland where eloping couples traditionally go, Dolly follows with Richard to stop them. When Sir William arrives, Dolly, to protect her sister, says she and Richard were eloping, without realizing that, according to Scottish law, her announcement makes them married. She resolves to divorce Richard, but eventually tears up their separation papers, and Richard reveals his identity.
