Synopsis

In a prologue, the greatest ruby in the world is stolen from Prince Kassim's great-grandfather's bride by a marauding Rajah. Two generations after the English conquer India, the ruby is offered for sale through wealthy London jeweler, Sir John Garnett. In the main story, Sir John employs detective James Brett to investigate the numerous jewel thefts from his wife, who actually hides the jewels while sleepwalking. After Longman, who heads the Diamond Gang with his lover, Countess Mirtza Charkoff, acquires the ruby by posing as a bargaining agent of the czar, he hides it in the countess' chocolate box. Lady Garnett takes the box while sleeping, and later it is mistakenly packed into the belongings of Captain Dalrymple, an army balloonist. The countess, who loves Prince Kassim, arranges for the prince to get the ruby after Longman recovers it, but Brett chases Longman and the prince to Dalrymple's balloon. Longman is thrown out and killed, and later, the prince is mortally wounded during a horse race. Lady Garnett recovers the jewel, and taking pity on the countess, prevents her arrest.
