Synopsis

Arthur Stillman, the senior member of a cotton manufacturing firm in Rockton, Massachusetts, whose inhabitants are dependent on the firm, closes his mills saying that he cannot obtain cotton. Sam Lloyd, an engineer in the mill, goes to a nearby town to work, and discovers that Stillman has hidden away large quantities of raw cotton in a warehouse so that he can corner the market. After Sam informs the workers, who decide to get justice or revenge from Stillman, Sam's sweetheart, Dell Hamilton, the popular daughter of a dyer, warns Stillman to open the mill. When he agrees only if she will marry him, and she reluctantly consents, Stillman arranges an illegal marriage. After Stillman genuinely falls in love with Dell, she returns to the mills. Shunned by the workers, her father, and Sam, who is about to marry another, Dell overhears Stillman and Sam conversing, and realizing that Stillman loves her, she returns to him.
