Synopsis

Thais, a notorious courtesan in ancient Alexandria, is loved by Paphnuce, a young Roman who has converted to Christianity. After a time, Thais' affection for Paphnuce cools, and he becomes a monk, preaching in the desert for five years. When he returns to Alexandria, he converts Thais to Christianity and she becomes a member of the White Sisters. Paphnuce still loves Thais, however, and he goes to the convent looking for her. Instead of leaving with him, however, she dies in his arms.
