Synopsis

Chemist Carl Evendorr and his wife, Irene, are poor but happy until Carl discovers a formula which earns him a fortune. After Irene insists that they move to a luxurious house, she falls prey to the parasitic Mrs. Wharton, who sees to it that Irene is surrounded by admiring men. To pay Irene's gambling debts, Carl invents another formula. When he finds Irene in an apparently compromising position with Stoney Brooke, a fortune-hunting friend of Mrs. Wharton, Brooke falsely confesses to seducing her to save his life. To protect their daughter Rose from scandal, Carl allows Irene to sue for divorce. Years later, Irene, married to lawyer Fred Hillman, is blackmailed by Stoney. Leaving Irene's house, Stoney encounters Mrs. Wharton, who caused his arrest, and fatally shoots her in the ensuing scuffle. When Carl is discovered near Mrs. Wharton's body, to save him Fred confesses and then pursues Stoney. In a struggle, Fred and Stoney fall from a precipice to their deaths. Irene and Carl then remarry for the sake of Rose.
