Synopsis

Even though Clara Benson loves John Grey, she accepts the marriage proposal of elderly millionaire Peter Vaughan in order to ensure her proper place in society. John eventually overcomes his despondency and marries Helen Barrington. When Clara begins to tire of her husband, she turns to John, determined to regain his love. So blatant are her flirtations that, upon witnessing Clara's behavior at a party, Peter dies of shock. John remains faithful to his beloved Helen despite Clara's continued pleas. Exasperated, Clara devises a scheme to manipulate stock investments in the Avalanche Company, thereby driving John to financial ruin. Certain that by offering John financial assistance she can regain his love, Clara comes to the rescue. Helen incorrectly believes that John is having an affair with his old flame and reluctantly sues for divorce, but the family lawyer reveals Clara's underhanded methods, and husband and wife are reconciled.
