Synopsis

Gerald Fitzgerald, the Earl of Kildare, called "The Ragged Earl" because of his debts, is advised by his solicitors to marry his wealthy cousin. Meanwhile, Sir Henry Hardcastle, also in debt, wants his stepsister Kathleen Fitzmorris to marry wealthy Lord Wildbrook. Kathleen refuses, however, and runs away, disguised as a boy. Ralph Forrester is sent to retrieve her, but Gerald hears her cries and takes the beautiful youth "Edward" to his castle. Kathleen is in love with Gerald, but when Forrester comes with a letter indicating that Gerald will marry his cousin, she returns home. Gerald follows her, but is told at Castle Hardwick that no person named Edward lives there. His old nurse, Sarah McHugh, convinces him that Edward is there, however, and Gerald scales the walls to discover Kathleen. Realizing that Edward is even more beautiful as Kathleen, Gerald rescues her and successfully concocts a plan to marry her.
