Synopsis

When Old Luke, a Maine fisherman, is stricken with smallpox, only Terry Dennison, the owner of a gristmill, and Owen, a fellow fisherman, will care for him. After Luke dies, Terry adopts his tiny daughter Crystal and then, so that she will not be lonely, he adopts orphan Ned Fairweather as well. Years later, Crystal marries Terry out of gratitude, even though she loves Ned. Terry and Crystal have a daughter, and then Ned goes to sea. When Terry learns, after Ned's return, that his adopted children have sacrificed their love for his happiness, he makes Ned promise that he will marry Crystal in five years if Terry does not return from sea. Five years later, an old sailor is washed ashore and takes refuge in a churchyard. There the man, actually Terry, talks with a little girl who, unknown to him, is his own daughter. As Owen leaves the church with Ned and Crystal, he recognizes Terry and takes him home. On his deathbed, Terry is joined by Ned and Crystal whose union he blesses.
