Synopsis

Southerner Harry Rivers Graham meets and subsequently secretly marries shopgirl Lena Nichols. Then Harry is summoned South by his dying, aristocratic father who threatens to disinherit him if he does not marry widow Lucy Belmont. Lena receives a note from Harry advising her to return home, and during his absence, she gives birth to a daughter, also named Lena. Harry meanwhile is detained by his father's death. Thinking that she has been deserted, Lena dies of a broken heart, and her daughter is raised by her grandmother. When Harry returns North, he is told that Lena has died and the child is gone. Years later, Harry has married Lucy and his stepson Durward meets and falls in love with Lena. When Harry sees her, he realizes that she is his daughter, but fearing scandal, he does not acknowledge her. He instead showers her with attention, which Lucy and Durward interpret as passion. Although Durward remains loyal, Lena suffers many indignities because of Lucy's suspicions, but is vindicated when Harry admits that she is his daughter.
