Synopsis
Sheriff Jim Radburn of Bowling Green, Missouri, is in love with Kate, the daughter of village blacksmith Jo Vernon. Without Kate's knowledge, but with Vernon's permission, Jim has financed Kate's college education. Sam Fowler, an express messenger for the Missouri Pacific Railroad engaged to Jim's sister Emily, is wrongfully convicted of abetting the robbery of the railroad, a crime actually committed by Robert Travers. Kate becomes infatuated with Travers and when her mother intercepts a letter from Travers proposing an elopement, she shows it to Radburn. The sheriff recognizes the handwriting as that of the hold-up man and his suspicions are confirmed when Fowler is released from jail and recognizes Travers as his assailant. Radburn pursues Travers to Kate's house, but, fearing for her reputation, the sheriff lets him escape. Later, Travers is apprehended and killed by Radburn. The townspeople are angered by Radburn's actions and want to lynch him, but he and Vernon dissuade them. Finally, Kate realizes that she loves her benefactor.
