Synopsis

June Holly, a sheltered orphan who has been reared in Lumberville, Missouri by her grandmother and Uncle Jim, falls in love with Alan Powell, the son of a wealthy St. Louis lumber merchant. Unaware that June is pregnant with his child, Alan returns to St. Louis, and then writes a letter proposing marriage, but the letter is intercepted by David Stone, one of June's spurned suitors. She decides to travel to St. Louis in search of Alan, but once there, she learns that he has gone on an extended business trip. She is befriended by a farmer's wife, at whose house her child is born, and then sets out for home on foot. Exhausted, June drops the baby and desperately tries to hide its body when she discovers that it has died from the fall. After the body is found, June is tried and convicted of infanticide and sentenced to death by hanging. Just before her scheduled execution, June's Salvation Army friend Martha Green finds Alan and tells him of her plight. Through Alan's efforts, the governor pardons June on the gallows and the next day the two lovers are married.
