Synopsis

An author, laboring over a manuscript that is to be picked up the following morning by the publisher's daughter, tries to weave together the threads of his story: Champneys Carter, an unsuccessful novelist and the son of deceased gambler Jackson Carter, falls in love with Dolly, the daughter of wealthy Herbert Ingram. Ingram opposes their marriage, preferring the fortune-hunting Count Lecoff over the novelist, so Dolly and Champneys elope and are wed by the Reverend Orlando Stone in a speeding car. Champney's novel, The Dead Heat , is a failure, but he dreams of Dromedary, an unbeatable horse, and soon becomes rich by betting on him at the races. Ingram meanwhile loses all of his money and is reconciled with his daughter and son-in-law. The count finally finds employment as a waiter. When the author has completed his novel, the publisher's daughter arrives and in her he recognizes the heroine of his story. The book, The Man Who Could Not Lose , is a great success and he marries the publisher's daughter.
