Synopsis

After leaving the university, college friends Robert Underwood, an aspiring artist, and Howard Jeffries, Jr., the profligate scion of a wealthy family, encounter nothing but misfortune. Recognizing Howard Jeffries, Sr.'s new wife as his former sweetheart, Robert uses her name to establish a clientele, but he is unsuccessful and finally writes that if she refuses him assistance, he will kill himself. Meanwhile, Howard, Jr., having married a waitress named Annie, is cast out by his father, whereupon he gets drunk and falls asleep on Robert's sofa. After Mrs. Jeffries, Sr. appears to deny Robert's request, the latter shoots himself, but Howard is arrested for murder and tortured into a confession by police captain Clinton. Jeffries, Sr. forbids his lawyer, Richard Brewster, to defend the boy, but Annie convinces the attorney to defy the old man. At the trial, hypnosis expert Dr. Bernstein invalidates the confession, after which Mrs. Jeffries produces Robert's desperate letter, thus clearing Howard's name.
