Synopsis

When Joe Morgan, known for his drinking and reckless spending, finds himself unable to meet the note on his mortgaged mill, his employee, Simon Slade, advances him the money, thereby becoming half owner. Joe's habits eventually result in the loss of his house, and while he drinks in Simon's recently opened tavern, his wife Fannie works as a drudge to support their little daughter Mary. One day, Fannie becomes seriously ill and sends Mary to fetch Joe, but the child is swept into a tavern brawl and killed. Following days of delirium, Joe reforms himself and becomes and advocate of the temperance movement. Meanwhile, Simon's son becomes an alcoholic and finally kills Simon during an argument. Inspired by Joe, the citizens vote to close the tavern, after which Joe resumes a happy life with Fannie.
