Synopsis
When lawyer John Dale visits his sister's family after a stay in the Middle East, his niece Nina asks him why he has never married. To answer her question, John recounts the story of his tragic love affair: Many years before, he and socialite Louise Tate fell in love, but their romance was spoiled unintentionally by the actions of her brother Gerald, who became a gambler and a thief. One evening, at a society ball, John saw Louise embracing a man, and he assumed that she had been unfaithful, unaware that the man was her brother. John left Louise, after which she died of grief. Her story eventually was related to her lost lover by Gerald just before his own death while attempting to save John from a bullet during a robbery. The story moves Nina to tears, but she is comforted by her uncle.
