Synopsis

Discouraged by the death of his wife after he is released from prison, Jim Jepson takes up with Doc Burns, his former cohort, and plans to tunnel into a bank. Bob Darrell, a detective on Jepsen's case, suspects that Mary, Jepson's daughter, is also involved, and when a raid on their house is made, Mary is arrested. Despite Jepson's protests, Mary is sentenced to prison for four years. Upon her release, starvation tempts her to steal a purse, but the sound of music from a church changes her mind. As she enters the church, she faints in front of the Rev. John Horton, who takes her to a hospital and then finds her a job with his sister, Mrs. Richard Blair. John and Mary fall in love, but their relationship is threatened by the unwanted advances of Mr. Blair. Meanwhile, Darrell, on Jepson's trail after he escapes from prison, arranges for an invitation to the Blair house to spy on Mary. Darrell witnesses Blair's advances, and when Mary is found standing over her employer's dead body, Darrell suspects that Jepson actually did the killing. Darrell then goes after Jepson who finally succumbs to exhaustion and, upon hearing that Mary has been charged with murder, confesses his crime, thus paving the way for Mary's future happiness.

Notes

Some sources reviewed this film at three reels, others at four. Ads for the film also conflict in citing the length. New York Dramatic Mirror credits the part of "The Reverend" to John Hopkins. Motography credits the part of "Reverend Jack Hopkins" to John Horton. Moving Picture World does not credit an actor, but calls the character Reverend John Horton. Because there was an actor named Jack Hopkins who worked in the Ramo film The Governor's Ghost (see below), it is most likely that he is also the actor playing the part of "The Reverend" in this film.
