Notes

According to news items, this production, which had its first public screening in Chicago on May 5, 1919, took over a year to complete. Although not reviewed in the trade papers, the film was scheduled to play in New York after its Chicago run, with musical accompaniment provided by Joseph C. Briel. The New York Morning Telegraph credits E. H. Griffith with "producing" and J. A. Barry with putting "the story into shape," but all other sources, including the MPSD, give sole directing credit to J. A. Barry and make no mention of Griffith. The film story is supposed to have been based on the life of Carl Schurz, a German revolutionary who fled to the United States and became an influential reformer in American politics during the nineteenth century.
