Synopsis

A new law sponsored by the reform movement which is intended to stop the "red light district," forces prostitute Hattie Fenshaw to seek her livelihood in the better residential section of the city. While stopping at a hotel, she meets Dudley Carlton, and through her feminine wiles, convinces him to abandon his sweetheart. Forced from the hotel, Hattie accepts an apartment from Harold Harding, a pillar of the church. There she meets the heads of the reform movement and soon wins their confidence. She later meets Betty who, unknown to her, is Harding's daughter and Carlton's former sweetheart. Taking advantage of Harding's absence, Hattie invites Carlton to the apartment, and he also brings Harding's son Hal along. Hattie sends for Betty to fill out the party and when Harding returns unexpectedly, and sees his own daughter there, he is rudely awakened to the effects of the anti-vice crusade, and learns the value of segregating houses of prostitution from the rest of the community.

Notes

Originally condemned by the National Board of Review, this film was trimmed from seven to five reels in order to obtain acceptance by the Board. It was shown to the trade press on June 15, 1917, and although Master Drama Features, Inc. decided to wait until winter to release it to the state rights market, because they thought the market would be slightly depressed due to the war, they released it in October 1917 because market conditions were favorable.
