Synopsis

In a prologue, lovers Denis De Fontenelle and Marcel Lupin perish on an island in the West Indies because of Denis's father's ire and an ill-gotten treasure. In the present, young inventor John Fulton and his backers, led by millionaire Cyris Morgan, journey to the West Indies to test Fulton's undersea periscope. While yachting, they discover the treasure chest on the sea floor and Fulton dives to investigate. As the party watches through the periscope in horror, the heavy lid of the chest falls upon Fulton's hands, holding him prisoner on the floor of the ocean. Luckily Morgan's daughter Dorothy, who has fallen in love with the young inventor, recalls a native sponge diver whom they had met in Nassau, and the diver, risking his own life, saves the young inventor, thwarting the plans of Fulton's rival for Dorothy's love, the Earl of Linwood, to eliminate his competition. The treasure chest is then recovered and found only to contain the diary and locket of the old-time lovers, the treasure having perished with them at sea.
