Synopsis

Because Jim Benton was always too busy running his cattle ranch to learn how to read or write, he hires schoolteacher Evelyn Hastings to open a classroom on his ranch, and he becomes her most devoted pupil. Evelyn makes Jim promise to shoot only in self-defense, a promise that he has trouble keeping when the sheep ranchers dam up the creek that supplies his ranch with water, and his cattle begin to suffer the consequences. Jim and the other cattle ranchers descend upon the dam to blow up the barrier, but the sheep ranchers struggle to prevent them from accomplishing their goal, and in the ensuing struggle, a sheep rancher is shot and killed. Deciding to seize the opportunity to eliminate Jim, the sheep men swear that he was the killer, and the cattle man is tried and sentenced to be hanged. As Jim ascends the scaffold to his death, the governor arrives, having been summoned by evidence presented by Evelyn, and Jim is pardoned.
