Synopsis
The Browns, a Western ranching family, give a big dance in the town hall. When Saunders, the ranch foreman, takes the Brown's son Buddy to a saloon, the Son-of-a-Gun, a miner whose deadly aim and unpredictable behavior have terrorized two counties, refuses to drink with the boy. After the Son-of-a-Gun's offensive manner at the dance leads Buddy to throw a rock at him, the boy's sister Mary, the idol of the ranch, nurses him. The next day, the citizens escort the Son-of-a-Gun to the border and put a price on his head if he should return. When Mother Brown becomes ill, Buddy goes with Saunders to sell their heifers to buy medicine. Saunders induces the boy to gamble, and with the help of a gambling hall owner, fleeces him. The Son-of-a-Gun sees the owner's accomplice cheating, and, after he stops this at gunpoint, he removes the boy forcibly from the hall. When the Son-of-a-Gun escorts Buddy home, his father shoots the Son-of-a-Gun from behind. He dies after making peace within the family.

Notes
The title of the film has been given as The Son of a Gun, The Son-of-a Gun, and Son of a Gun in some contemporary news items. The film was shot at studios in Glendale, CA and at the Devil's Garden, CA on the edge of the desert about 150 miles from Los Angeles. It was the second film released by the Golden West Producing Co., of which G. M. Anderson, popularly known as "Broncho Billy," was the head.
Modern sources state that Harry Todd played the role of the sheriff and that this was Anderson's last released film as a featured actor. According to a contemporary news item, fifty cowboys were in the supporting cast. One source notes that the story was "founded on a stirring poem by C. E. B."
