Synopsis
When the United States enters the war, Tom Merritt, who works in a machine shop for Henry Fair, a "captain of industry," tries to enlist even though it means leaving his sweetheart, but he is ordered to carry on with his work. After Tom invents a machine for raising sunken ships, Fair, a war profiteer who consistently outbids the government on war contracts, attempts to secure control of the invention, but his scheme is frustrated. Meanwhile, Fair's sister Vera, who loves Tom, tries to make him part with his sweetheart. Later incidents include an attack on Tom's sweetheart by a chauffeur using drugged wine, a frame-up to compromise her with Tom, the attempt by Fair to deliver Tom's invention to a group who want to restore the old regime in Germany, the quelling of a mutiny aboard a ship by U.S. Marines, and the return home of the American fleet.
