Synopsis
Roma, a young girl who has never known her parents, is raised by "Uncle" Malone and "Daddy" Crespi, two old men who have grown rich in the pawn brokerage business. Roma's guardians send her to a fashionable school, where she is made miserable when her schoolmates taunt her because she is a "nobody." To remedy Roma's unhappiness, Uncle and Daddy invent the story that she is Lady Parington, the daughter of an English earl. While at school, Roma meets Jack Thurston, a young Englishman, and they become sweethearts. Roland Fabor, a gentleman crook, also is attracted to Roma. Upon learning that his nephew is infatuated with Lady Parington, Jack's uncle, Lord Pembroke, becomes suspicious because he is good friends with the Parington family and knows they have no daughter. Pembroke hires a detective to investigate, and when Jack learns that his sweetheart is the ward of two pawnbrokers, his ardor cools. Roma then turns to Fabor, who, at a reception given in her honor, steals a locket inscribed with the initials "R. P.," which he takes to the pawnbrokers. The two old men recognize it as the locket Roma wore when her mother entrusted her to them, and Lord Pembroke recognizes it as his missing daughter's necklace. Thus, Roma is identified as Pembroke's daughter - truly a member of nobility - and all ends happily as Jack and Roma plan to be wed.
